ALUM RESIDUALS LANDFILLING
DEVELOPMENT OF PROTOCOL DOCUMENT
The AWWA Research Foundation
selected EE&T to prepare a document to guide utilities and
regulators in selecting design requirements for landfilling water plant
residuals. A major portion of this design guidance document focuses on
monofill landfills. Items covered include general siting requirements;
regulatory impacts; volume and area determination; the need for liners
and their design requirements; leachate collection, treatment and
disposal; selection of landfilling method based on residuals physical
characteristics; and design considerations.
Specific technical issues this
document addresses include laboratory test methodologies for evaluating
residuals handleability to determine residuals impacts on trucking,
dozing and compaction as well as selecting optimum residuals impacts on
trucking, dozing and compaction as well as selecting optimum residuals
dewatering equipment. Also addressed is detailed laboratory research on
the chemical characteristics of leachate from water plant residuals
monofills. This research included different types of residuals and their
leachate impact on liners and leachate collection and leachate treatment
options.
